SCHOOL HOURS INFORMATION SESSIONS

Anne Arundel County Public Schools is shifting to healthier school hours at the start of the 2022-2023 school year. To help provide families, students, and employees with as much information as possible, Board of Education members have taken part in a series of information sessions to provide more details about school hours in their specific districts. Sessions for each individual district, as well as specialty sites and magnet programs, can be viewed below.

  • Did anyone consider that teens are now going to stay up later because their start time is later thus resulting in the same amount of sleep they get now? Also, morning activities for middle school students should be allowed since it’s optional. By the time they are dismissed/get home, it will be dinner time or time for sports practice which doesn’t allow for any school-based extracurricular activities.

  • My son attends Bates and I drive him to school. I see the new opening time is 9:15am. What time will I be able to drop him off in the morning?

    Drop off times vary by school, and are based on established teacher hours.  Teacher hours should be established no later than July 15, 2022. Please check with your school for this information for School Year 2022-2023.

  • What will be the process as to assigning a bus to a student? How will driver know if said student rides their bus? Will child still be taken to school if they are at the wrong bus stop and don't belong on that bus?

    The AACPS Transportation department is working diligently to alleviate potential issues that may occur as a result of this upcoming change for School Year 2022-23.  While I cannot speak to the specific scenario you are outlining here, I encourage you to contact the appropriate person on this list (right side of the site).  They can better assist you and discuss this  concern you have regarding bus transportation for the new year.

  • Will any child care providers that would provide after school care for students at Georgetown East Elementary be at the child care fair? Will Anne Arundel County Rec & Parks be expanding their child care programs into the Annapolis Cluster Elementary schools, specifically the ones that are currently not served by the City of Annapolis Rec & Parks (i.e. Georgetown East, Tyler Heights, Eastport)?

    AACPS realizes the school hours shift will necessitate child care arrangements for families who have not required that service before. Families should begin to seek out those services now. AACPS is discussing ways to connect child-care providers with families.

    This chart lists school start as well as end times. While the chart is a draft, it is not expected that significant changes will occur. It will be finalized in approximately 2 weeks.

  • 'With the new Superintendent not starting until the beginning of August, how will these new changes be implemented? There will be three different Superintendents between now and the beginning of the school year. A year with huge changes to the entire school system and no stable leadership. Also, were teachers and staff members given a choice to voice their opinions on the time changes? How are these changes impacting teacher retention in AA County? '

    AACPS has been working on the various challenges that a shift in school hours brings for quite some time.  We do and will continue to have stable leadership during this transition.  

    This decision was a unanimous one made by our Board of Education, and is based on empirical data from much research and studying of this topic.  Examples of this research are on this website as well as at https://www.aacps.org/schoolhourschange .

  • Can you explain how bus routing will be more efficient when bus companies have publicly disclosed that they will not be able to handle this implementation due to limited bus drivers and staff?

    The shift in school hours is independent of the issues related to the bus driver shortage. AACPS is working with Prismatic Services, Inc., the consultant hired by the Board to create efficiencies in student bus transportation for the 2022-2023 school year.
